Studio Visit with Yoskay Yamamoto
Dailydujour recently visited Yoskay Yamamoto in his NoHo studio for a look at the numerous pieces in various stages of completion for his first-ever all sculpture show ‘Jokes on Me’ opening this weekend (3.23) at LeBasse Projects Chinatown. Upon looking around, we were struck with the sheer number of pieces in play for the exhibition. While many have a tongue-in-cheek character including a large number which draw on popular toys and iconic characters, others would be equally at home in his previous solo efforts. The other overwhelming impression one gets in viewing the work and chatting with Yoskay, is his natural ease with sculpting, be it in carving completely original pieces in wood or deftly modifying production toys in his aesthetic.
Yoskay will showcase his legions of small scale sculptures in an installation incorporating small, mostly abstract pieces on wood (including photo transfers) for an overall night-time ambience. On a related note, Yoskay mentioned his longing to once again see Japan’s night sky, which in contrast with LA’s horizons bleached by bright city lights, sparkles with brilliant stars set against the naturally dark background. Many of the pieces in his current show, including his small bear sculptures painted in dark midnight blue with subtle hints of metallics echo this visceral desire.
