Salao Coboi’s Monstrous Runway Looks

High fashion is often dismissed for being inaccessible and unwearable. But there is an artistry behind runway fashion that goes beyond day-to-day practicality — an attribute Portuguese artist Salao Coboi illuminates with his playful, humorous new series of resin sculptures. Titled “The 9 Worthies” because of the mystical associations of the number nine, the series is composed of nine surreal monsters dressed in Autumn/Winter 2012 runway looks from the most coveted designers. Threads by Celine, Raf Simons and Marc Jacobs make appearances in the sculptures. Glamorous, ugly, delicate and grotesque all at the same time, these sculptures invite us to examine the idea of beauty and sophistication. November 29 through December 12, Salao Coboi will be in the group show “End of the Summer” at MOHS Exhibit in Copenhagen, Denmark with San Poggio, Mu Pan, Heiko Mueller, Marco Wagner, Dave Barnes, Nicolas Barrome, Rob Sato and Brendan Danielsson.
