For her upcoming solo show, “In the Dark,” at New York’s Last Rites Gallery, Yoko D’Holbachie (Hi-Fructose Vol. 6 cover artist) has taken a new aesthetic direction her work, trading her signature candy-colored palette for incandescent lighting and colors that appear to glow. D’Holbachie found inspiration in international folklore for this new series of paintings, turning to Haitian, Egyptian and Greek deities to mold her otherworldly characters. Her creatures appear glorified and enshrined. Her unusual use of the chiaroscuro effect in non-realist work elevates these figures, endowing them with a sense of mysticism. “In the Dark” opens on January 19, but until then, check out our preview courtesy of Last Rites Gallery after the jump.
