On View: Santiago Caruso’s “Ars Obscura” at Last Rites Gallery

Last Saturday, New York’s Last Rites Gallery presented Argentinian artist Santiago Caruso‘s first-ever US show, “Ars Obscura: Terror y Miseria.” A dark and enigmatic body of work, the pieces in the show were divided into three series: “Superstition and Inquisition,” “Revealers, Prophets & Liars” and “Profound Shadow From the Past.” The works in the show reference dark surrealism as well as medieval religious painting. Caruso explores the perverse elements of civilization through macabre images and occult religious symbols. Take a look at some of the works in the show after the jump, images courtesy of Last Rites Gallery, and check out the show before it closes on April 6.
